Hi, my consultant has offered me hydroxychloroquine to replace the prednisolene that I've been on for 2 1/2 years, he says it's totally my decision. I've read all the gump etc, but just wanting some first hand knowledge from anyone that is on or has taken these two drugs together. Many thanks Woodyx

Hi Woody,I've been taking Hydroxy for about 9 months and during that time I also took steroid tablets just for one month though and I had no trouble at all.  At the moment I'm taking Hydroxy,Naproxen and Omeprazole and my last blood test was fine and my Das score even better,however the past couple of months I've been in a flare especially in the neck,shoulders and top of arms and the rheumy nurse did say that when I see the consultant end of July he may introduce another med to the ones I'm taking.But I had no side effects from taking the Hydroxy and Prednisolone together.Hope that's of help. Thanks Brenda, sorry my post was a bit rushed, I meant to say that the Hydroxy was going to replace the prednisolene and I'd then be on Hydroxy with MTX. It's good to know you've not had no bad reaction thought - sorry to hear your RA has flared - take it easy, best wishes. Woodyx

I've been on hydroxy since November and have found it very helpful with no side effects.

Hi Woody,
I have been taking this for nearly two years and it is a good med and definitely something to consider.
It is known as the 'softer' option to add onto mtx than say, slz or Azothrioprine....

Hi Woody,
I had Sulphasalazine and Hydroxy added to my Methotrexate nearly a year ago now. Have experienced no problems with it, apart from usual nausea which I put down to Methotrexate. This has reminded me also that I need to get my eyes tested again, as they recomended an eye test prior to starting hydroxy and yearly thereafter. Sometimes experience stomach pains, but feel this could be any of the medication and I do take Omeprazole.

Hi Woody - I've been taking hydroxy for nearly 3 months with methotrexate and naproxyn, no miraculous improvement yet but no side effects at all. I understand it can take a while to 'kick in'.

Hi im gld your rheumy going to add planequil if you agree mine did last November,though wasnt as much for ra though did say it work well with mtx. do you know what dose im at 200 mg at moment. lv melly cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun

Dear woody I am on 400 mg Hydroxyc and 5mg predislone. the view is to effentiallly replace or remove the predislone. depending on my RA it could mean supplementing with sulpahzine or just gradually reducing the steriods or even leaving me on the steriods. I dont want the steriods side effects but doc says too small to worry about. Thanikfully the Hydroxy seems to be doing the job - fingers crossed. the eye side effect is suppose to be quite rare. Not sure how much predislone you are on but I believe under 10 mg is less harmful side effects. Neither drug needs to be monitored so your liver will be happy as you will be not having to go to hospital. my thinking is that i am nervous being on hydroxyc but weary about random side effects caused by steriods so will discuss with my doctor during drug review next week. Thank you all for your experiences, it's really helpful and made up my mind to try the hydroxychloroquine. The only issue I was weary about, like you MrsWoman, was any side effect to the eyes as I had my eyes lasered approx 10 years ago, but I'll keep a close eye (excuse the pun) on my eyes. I'll be taking 400mg (2 tablets) together in the evening after food - as well as 10mg of MTX injection and until further notice prednisolene alternate days of 2.5mg and 5mg. Thanks again Woody x
